One of the closest things to visit since you are staying in Akrotiri. Just 2 km away from El Destino, easily accessible and an excellent option for history buffs. The museum of Prehistoric Thira and the Ancient Thira Settlement is located in Akrotiri village. Both are situated nearby each other, so you may take some time to visit both. The archeological site of Akrotiri is an old settlement (ruins of which are preserved) and shows the great prosperity that followed during the 17th century BC.
It is said that the residents of this ancient city fled after the volcano warned of an eruption. Most of the inhabitants rushed and left on time, but without caring for their personal belongings and valuables. Thus, their legacy is indelible and well preserved in this archaeological site. Among others, one may see murals depicting landscapes of Santorini, ceramics, jars, or even belongings such as ancient grills and a portable oven – which is extraordinary given the timestamp.
During your visit, it is also advised to visit the ancient settlement of Thira, which is on the same area. One of the most well-preserved ancient settlements of the world is found here. Historically, it is proven that it was inhabited for at least 100 years and various reports indicate that the settlement had passed a period of prosperity during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Thera is also mentioned as a shelter during the Byzantine years. Make sure to check also the Agora, the Sanctuary of Artemis, and the Royal Gallery as well as the ancient theater, all of which are found on top of the Aegean sea.
